Products Name: ProSoft MVI56E-AFC Output Point I/O Module
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The ProSoft MVI56E-AFC is an EtherNet/IP-to-Feldbus/PROFIBUS DP communication processor module designed for use in ControlLogix® and CompactLogix® systems from Rockwell Automation. It enables seamless communication between Allen-Bradley Logix controllers and devices or systems on Feldbus or PROFIBUS DP networks. This module acts as a gateway, translating commands and data between the EtherNet/IP protocol, which is widely used in industrial Ethernet environments, and the older but still prevalent Feldbus and PROFIBUS DP fieldbus protocols. It allows Logix controllers to easily interface with existing equipment or specialized devices that utilize these fieldbus standards, facilitating system integration and upgrades.
Host Controller Compatibility: Rockwell Automation ControlLogix® and CompactLogix® controllers.
Primary Network Interface: EtherNet/IP via an embedded Ethernet port (RJ45 connector).
Secondary Network Interface: Supports Feldbus or PROFIBUS DP. Requires an external transceiver (e.g., RS485 for Feldbus, PROFIBUS DP connector) connected to the module’s serial port.
Data Transfer Rates:
EtherNet/IP: Standard Ethernet speeds (typically 10/100 Mbps).
Feldbus: Typically up to 187.5 kbps (depending on specific Feldbus variant).
PROFIBUS DP: Typically up to 12 Mbps.
Supported Device Profiles: Capable of supporting various Feldbus and PROFIBUS DP device profiles, often configurable via parameters.
Memory: Includes memory for storing configuration, device profiles, and communication buffers.
Power Requirements: Typically powered by the backplane of the Logix controller (e.g., 24V DC on the backplane).
Physical Form Factor: 1756 (ControlLogix) or 1769 (CompactLogix) module form factor.
Operating Temperature: Standard industrial operating temperature range (e.g., 0°C to 60°C).
Protocol Conversion: Provides a reliable bridge between modern EtherNet/IP networks and legacy Feldbus/PROFIBUS DP networks, extending the useful life of existing equipment.
System Integration: Simplifies the integration of Logix controllers with devices from different vendors that use Feldbus or PROFIBUS DP.
Reduced Wiring: Can sometimes consolidate communication by allowing multiple fieldbus devices to communicate over a single EtherNet/IP connection back to the controller.
Ease of Use: Integrates directly into the Logix environment, utilizing standard Rockwell Automation programming software (e.g., Studio 5000 Logix Designer) for configuration and diagnostics.
Configuration Flexibility: Offers parameters to configure device profiles, data mapping, and communication timing.
Redundancy Support: May support EtherNet/IP redundancy features provided by the Logix controller.
Correct Transceiver: Ensure the appropriate external transceiver is used for the specific Feldbus or PROFIBUS DP network and correctly connected to the module’s serial port.
Network Wiring: Follow strict wiring guidelines for both EtherNet/IP (Twisted Pair Ethernet) and Feldbus/PROFIBUS DP (RS485 or dedicated DP cabling) to avoid signal integrity issues and network failures.
Termination Resistors: Properly terminate Feldbus and PROFIBUS DP networks as required by the standards to prevent signal reflections.
Configuration Accuracy: Carefully configure the module parameters (device profiles, I/O mapping, etc.) to match the connected fieldbus devices and the controller’s expectations. Incorrect configuration can lead to communication errors or device malfunction.
Power Supply Stability: Ensure the Logix controller backplane provides stable power within specifications.
Network Security: Implement appropriate network security measures on the EtherNet/IP side, as this module connects a potentially less secure fieldbus network to the Ethernet.
Documentation: Always refer to the official ProSoft MVI56E-AFC datasheet and user manual for detailed configuration instructions, parameter descriptions, and troubleshooting guidance.
Legacy System Upgrades: Integrating new Logix controllers into older machines or plants that use Feldbus or PROFIBUS DP for field device communication.
Mixed Protocol Environments: Connecting devices from different eras or vendors within the same plant, where some devices use EtherNet/IP and others use Feldbus/PROFIBUS DP.
Specialized Equipment Control: Communicating with high-end drives, sensors, or actuators that only offer Feldbus or PROFIBUS DP communication interfaces.
Process Industries: Common in industries like chemical, pharmaceutical, and food & beverage where Feldbus and PROFIBUS DP devices are prevalent for process control and instrumentation.
Machine Building: Enabling Logix-based control systems in custom machinery that incorporates components requiring Feldbus or PROFIBUS DP connectivity.
