PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Product Detailed Description

  • Operating Principle: The Velomitor sensor is a piezoelectric velocity transducer. It contains a seismic mass suspended by springs, which is coupled to a piezoelectric element. When the machine vibrates, the seismic mass moves relative to the sensor casing, generating a charge across the piezoelectric element. This charge is then converted into a voltage or current signal proportional to the vibration velocity.

  • Self-Generating: Unlike eddy current proximity probes which require an external power supply to create a magnetic field, Velomitor sensors generate their own signal, simplifying wiring and reducing power consumption.

  • Absolute Vibration Measurement: It measures the absolute vibration of the machine casing or structure relative to free space, as opposed to relative vibration (like a proximity probe measuring shaft relative to bearing).

  • Frequency Response: Designed to have a wide and flat frequency response over its operational range, ensuring accurate measurement across various vibration frequencies encountered in machinery.

  • Robust Construction: Encased in a hermetically sealed, stainless steel body, making it highly resistant to harsh industrial environments, including dust, moisture, and corrosive substances.

  • Integral Cable or Connectorized: Available with integral armored cables for direct connection or with connectors (e.g., MIL-C-5015) for modularity.

  • Applications: Primarily used for monitoring vibration on slower-speed machinery, gearboxes, structures, piping, and as a complementary measurement to proximity probes on rotating machinery (for casing vibration).

Product Parameters (Typical, as specific models may vary slightly)

While there isn't a single "2108B2101" for Velomitors (that was a Honeywell pressure sensor), common Bently Nevada Velomitor models like the 330500, 330525, or the older 9200 series share these general characteristics:

  • Measurement Type: Absolute vibration velocity.

  • Transducer Type: Piezo-velocity (seismic, self-generating).

  • Sensitivity: Typically 3.94 mV/mm/s (100 mV/in/s) ± 5% or 7.87 mV/mm/s (200 mV/in/s) ± 5%.

  • Frequency Response:

    • Typically 4.5 Hz to 5000 Hz (270 cpm to 300,000 cpm) ± 3 dB.

    • Some models might have a lower frequency cutoff (e.g., 2.5 Hz).

  • Output Signal:

    • Voltage output (e.g., from 3.94 mV/mm/s to 7.87 mV/mm/s proportional to velocity).

    • Many modern Velomitor sensors, particularly the Velomitor CT, convert this to a current output (e.g., 4-20 mA) for long-distance transmission.

  • Amplitude Range: Typically 50 g peak (e.g., for 330500), limited by transducer output.

  • Linearity: Less than 1% deviation from best fit straight line.

  • Transverse Sensitivity: Less than 5% of axial sensitivity.

  • Operating Temperature Range:

    • Standard: -30 °C to +120 °C (-22 °F to +250 °F)

    • High Temp Options: Up to +200 °C (+392 °F) for specific models.

  • Storage Temperature Range: -50 °C to +120 °C (-58 °F to +250 °F).

  • Electrical Isolation: Electrically isolated from the casing to prevent ground loops.

  • Casing Material: 316L Stainless Steel.

  • Sealing: Hermetically sealed (often IP68).

  • Mounting: Single 1/4-28 UNF or M6 x 1 mounting hole. Requires stud mounting for best performance.

  • Integral Cable Options: Armored, unarmored, various lengths (e.g., 5m, 10m).

  • Connector Options: 2-pin MIL-C-5015 connector.

  • Hazardous Area Approvals: Often intrinsically safe or explosion-proof certifications (ATEX, IECEx, CSA, FM) for use in hazardous locations.

Product Advantages

  • Robust and Reliable: Hermetically sealed stainless steel construction provides excellent durability and long-term stability in harsh industrial environments.

  • No External Power Required (Self-Generating): Simplifies wiring, reduces installation costs, and eliminates the need for external power supplies at the sensor location (for voltage output types).

  • Absolute Vibration Measurement: Provides critical data on the overall structural integrity and casing vibration of machinery, which is particularly important for slower-speed machines or those with rolling element bearings.

  • Wide Frequency Response: Captures a broad spectrum of vibration frequencies, allowing detection of various machinery faults (e.g., imbalance, misalignment, looseness, gear mesh issues, rolling element bearing defects).

  • Versatile Application: Suitable for a wide range of machinery types and industrial settings, including pumps, fans, compressors, gearboxes, motors, and structures.

  • Electrical Isolation: Helps prevent ground loop issues, ensuring signal integrity.

  • Hazardous Area Certifications: Many models are approved for use in explosive atmospheres, expanding their application scope.

  • Compatibility: Designed to integrate seamlessly with Bently Nevada's monitoring systems (e.g., 3500 series, 1900/65 series, and other data acquisition systems).

Precautions

  • Proper Mounting: The performance of a Velomitor sensor is highly dependent on its mounting. It must be rigidly mounted to the machine casing via a stud. Improper mounting (e.g., using a magnetic base for continuous monitoring, loose mounting, or mounting on a non-representative surface) can severely attenuate high-frequency signals and lead to inaccurate readings.

  • Mounting Surface Preparation: The mounting surface should be flat, clean, and free from paint or debris to ensure good mechanical coupling.

  • Cable Routing and Protection: Ensure cables are routed securely, protected from physical damage, extreme temperatures, and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Avoid sharp bends.

  • Ground Loops: Although internally isolated, attention to proper grounding practices in the overall monitoring system is still crucial to prevent noise and signal degradation.

  • Temperature Limits: Adhere strictly to the specified operating and storage temperature ranges to prevent sensor damage or degradation of performance.

  • Hazardous Area Installation: For hazardous locations, strictly follow the relevant intrinsically safe or explosion-proof installation standards and wiring practices. Use certified barriers or isolators where required.

  • Calibration: While factory calibrated, regular system verification and calibration checks are recommended as part of a comprehensive condition monitoring program.

  • Sensor Selection: Choose the correct sensitivity and frequency response based on the machinery type and expected vibration characteristics.
